Diesel VS. Petrol: Which Is The Better Option?

By: Kris LeSueur   |   14 Sep 2020

This debate has been around for as long as we have had petrol and diesel engines, and this is one of the crucial decisions you'll have to make if you are planning on buying a car. Which one is better for your wallet? Which one is better for the environment? What are the alternatives, pros, and cons?

Let’s find out!

As per calculations, an average motorist spends around $100,000 on fuel, petrol, and diesel is the most significant expense out of all. There is not much difference between the two from a financial perspective, but with diesel, you will have high annual mileages. It may sound like a plus point, but a diesel vehicle comes with a higher tax. Therefore a higher price along with the damage it does to the environment. It is also circulating that petrol, and diesel-run cars will be banned by the year 2035, which means that there will be alternate fuel options and a much bigger market for electric vehicles.

Diesel

The perception that diesel-run vehicles are slower and noisier than petrol run vehicles have been around for quite some time now. There's no doubt that diesel has narrowed down the gap significantly.

Here are a few pros and cons of diesel!

Pros

  • Diesel engines are more efficient and use 20% less fuel, which means they have a cheaper running cost. Previously, they had higher resale value, but that is gradually changing with time.
  • For new diesel cars, the tax is typically higher, but with lower CO2 emissions, they are not a threat to the environment.
  • The driving experience is better with diesel due to its low-speed torque. It results in better towing ability and overtaking power.

Cons

  • One of the major cons has to be a higher tax. Some cities where there are ultra-low emission zones might add extra charges as well.
  • Despite low CO2 emissions, diesel fuel has tiny particles that have been linked to asthma and breathing disorders by scientists.
  • The engine is slightly noisier!

Petrol

Here are the pros and cons of petrol:

Pros

  • Petrol vehicles are relatively cheaper to buy and have low service costs.
  • The CO2 emissions are high, but it does not produce harmful emissions like nitrogen, making it a safer alternative for the environment.
  • The engine is less noisy, allowing for a better driving experience!

Cons

  • They are less efficient and require more fuel
  • More CO2 emission
  • The driver has to change gears more regularly to make the most of the engine's power.

Although petrol and diesel are the most widely used vehicles, this is slowly bound to transform. With hybrid, electric, and hydrogen fuel cells, there are options than ever!
